IS STEM CELL BANKING FOR ME?

Stem cell banking is ideal for patients falling into one of two groups:

The first are those who are already planning to have elective liposuction. They have decided to eliminate adipose tissue (fat) from a certain part of their body and, rather than having the fat thrown away, choose to store their healthy, fat derived stem cells for later use.

WHY DOES IT MAKE SENSE TO BANK YOUR STEM CELLS?

Patients just like you are banking their stem cells when their cells are younger, stronger and healthier to be used for future cosmetic and medical treatments. WHY IS BANKING STEM CELLS IMPORTANT?

Future applications for your healthy stem cells are almost infinite. Researchers worldwide are revealing that stem cells possess unique and significant capabilities for the growth, repair and even regeneration of damaged cells and tissues throughout the body. Stem cells can easily replicate the characteristics of other body cells including fat, bone, tendon, nerve, muscle and cartilage.

WHAT SORTS OF TREATMENTS ARE STEM CELLS USED FOR?

IS BANKING STEM CELLS CONTROVERSIAL?

In this case, not at all. Adisave’s stem cell banking uses adult stem cells, which are completely different from - and better than - the embryonic stem cells that generate ethical and religious controversy.

WHY ARE ADULT STEM CELLS BETTER THAN EMBRYONIC STEM CELLS?

Three reasons:

  1. They avoid the controversy associated with embryonic stem cells, which require the termination of an in vitro fertilized egg, raising serious religious and ethical issues for many people. The harvesting of adult stem cells violates no religious beliefs or practices; in fact, the procedure is endorsed by a number of religious groups across North America.
  2. Whereas adult stem cells are programmed to react to different environmental clues, embryonic stem cells lack this capability; in other words, they have no “on/off switch”.
  3. Because they lack this programmed on/off mechanism, embryonic stem cells pose the danger of forming a tumor called a teratoma, which can evolve to become malignant.

HOW MANY OF MY STEM CELLS WILL BE BANKED?

Our extraction process averages between one to two million stem cells per gram of fat. We normally process 100 to 150 grams of fat so this amount yields approximately one to two hundred million ideal stem and progenitor cells to be banked.

HOW LONG CAN MY STEM CELLS BE BANKED?

Theoretically - indefinitely. By banking your stem cells in a state of suspended animation through cryopreservation, our process will maintain your stem cells’ potency for decades. In addition, we will perform quality assurance testing on samples six months after storage and then at yearly intervals to verify their health and potency. Most scientists believe cells stored at -180 ºC will be healthy and potent for the rest of your life.

WHAT IS THE COST OF BANKING MY STEM CELLS?

Our cost for the separation process and first year of storage is $1,795 plus applicable taxes.

CAN MY DOCTOR HELP ME BANK MY STEM CELLS?

Yes, provided your doctor is registered in Adisave’s provider network.

DO I ARRANGE THE PROCEDURE THROUGH ADISAVE OR THROUGH MY DOCTOR?

Simply advise your doctor that you want to bank your stem cells with Adisave, and your doctor will get in touch with us. We will contact you to confirm that all is arranged. After your procedure, we will send you a card containing all of the information about your stem cells and what you need if you wish to contact us.

CAN MY STEM CELLS BE USED BY OTHER MEMBERS OF MY FAMILY?

No. These cells are from you and for your use alone, eliminating any risk of rejection.

IS THERE ANY RISK OF MY BANKED STEM CELLS GETTING LOST OR MIXED UP WITH SOMEONE ELSE’S?

No. A triple-failsafe procedure eliminates any possibility of labelling error. When your registered physician informs us that you wish to bank your stem cells with us, you are assigned a client number and link in our computers using barcode labelling. During the procedure, this barcode labelling will be on every item containing your stem cells at every step of the way. At the storage facility, your stem cells will be stored in a cryo-vial with the barcode on the outside. Then facility personnel will put this vial into a heat-sealed cryo-tube, which is also labelled with your personal barcode.

WHERE WILL ADISAVE BANK MY STEM CELLS?

Your stem cells are stored in two completely separate locations to guarantee their safety: at our state-of-the-art cryopreservation facility at Adisave in Toronto, Ontario and at Core Cryolab located at the Toronto General Hospital.

HOW WOULD A POWER FAILURE AT THE STORAGE FACILITY AFFECT MY BANKED STEM CELLS?

It wouldn’t. Our process preserves your stem cells in the vapor phase of a liquid nitrogen freezer, which can fully function for days without electrical power. So, your stem cells would be cryopreserved at a safe temperature without damage, even in the event of a major power outage.

WHAT IS BIO-INSURANCE?

Bio-insurance refers to the revolutionary medical process of removing and banking healthy stem cells and then later returning them to your body when you need them, whether for medical treatments or for reconstructive procedures.

What is cryopreservation?

Cryopreservation is a process in which cells or whole tissues are preserved by cooling at extremely low sub-zero temperatures, typically -180ºC. At such a low temperature, almost all biological activity - including the biochemical reactions that would lead to cell death – are effectively shut down.

WHAT IS AUTOLOGOUS STEM CELL TRANSPLANTATION?

“Autologous stem cell transplantation” means that stem cells are taken from, and later returned to, the same person. As a result, autologous stem cells are always the perfect match, right down to the DNA.
